Do's and Don'ts of Employing It Staff

Do
Place more importance on experience rather than qualifications
Consider hiring candidates who appear to be relaxed rather than tense
Provide ongoing training for IT staff
Prevent burn-out by encouraging a couple of day's holiday per quarter
Consider hiring a fresh, young candidate if you are looking to hire long-term, rather than the more experienced, older prospect - you can always train your new employee and you stand a better change of keeping him or her if they see opportunity to grow
Consider hiring the more expensive, well qualified applicant if you are looking at a short-term contract - you will achieve your goals faster and more effectively, saving money in the long term
Consider hiring extra IT staff to help with specific projects so that your permanent staff don't expend all their energy on the project while ignoring their regular tasks
Don't
Underpay or skimp on IT budgets - it is worth it in the long run to pay more for better quality
Demand a strict 9-5 working day - IT staff tend to be more productive when allowed to work flexi-time
Ignore your IT department when it comes to business planning and development - allow them to attend meeting to nurture teamwork and cooperation
Hire people with no interpersonal skills - it is important that you IT department can communicate ideas and translate difficult terminology into layman's terms
